Above-the-line- the expenses that are associated with getting the movie made such as director, cast, producers, script.  In major studio films these expenses are higher than the below-the-line expenses.
Literally "above the line" on the budget sheet.

Below-the-line- the expenses that are associated with the physical production such as set construction, permits, location, etc.
Literally "below the line" on the budget sheet.

Room Tone- the ambient noise- the total sound that exists in an area (without people talking or moving around)

-When the sound guys to hold for room tone, everybody freezes so he can record the ambient noise.  Having the room tone recorded can be useful later in editing.

1. Be a good listener.  You may even want to keep a small notebook and pencil in your pocket.
2. Be responsible and do your job.  You are easy to replace.
3. Learn as much as you can.  This is a great opportunity to learn about the different departments and what they do.
4. Don't complain.  (See number 2)

PA (production assistant) (gopher- as in go for this, go for that)
-PAs are in every department.  They do not have a union, unlike most positions in film.
In the film industry you usually get your early experience as a PA.  It is a good way to learn about the different departments when you are starting out.

sandbag/shotbag- a sturdy bag filled with sand or shot that is used to balance or weight a stand or equipment

Boa bag- a long sandbag that can be wrapped around something.


These come in different weights.

Key light- the main light on a subject.
- If the key light is directly in front of the subject, it will flatten them out.  = not good
- You want the key light at an angle to the subject.
- When you are outside, in the daytime, the key light is the sun.

Cheese Plate- an aluminum plate with holes drilled in it
- used to mount cameras or monitors to different surfaces- (you don't always use a tripod)

dodge- lightens the pixels (area of photo)
burn- darkens the pixels (or area of photo)

Used in darkroom photography and photoshop.

Use these to:
1. improve the exposure of your photo and bring out detail
2. direct the viewer's attention using highlights and shadows
3. create impact with dramatic highlights and shadows

C-stand: (short for Century stand)- a metal stand with tripod legs that can be folded together for flat storage.  Found in the grip dept. used rigging and lighting



Grip head: a clamp that goes on the end of a c-stand.  Used to hold up umbrellas, flags, etc.
